This K. Balachandar production has nothing new or different to offer but provides an old youth-advice masala with some sentiment pickle, sweet comedy and koottu songs(borrowed tunes!!). Suddenly the new generation of film makers have realized the present-day youngsters are wasting their youth with stupid love and just-time-passing, instead of finding a job to look after their family (thank god they don't advice them to make movies to advice other youngsters).
Four useless youths (Here we go again!!) have nothing to do but sit on a wall commenting on the passersby, smoke at the mercy of the local petti shop 'Nayar' and drink in the night from their parents money. Sound familiar? Yes we have seen it! We have done it! The savior (the one who can change their monotonous life) comes in the form of Kushboo (looks slim). She writes love letters/makes phone calls with the ghost name 'Devi' to all the four and asks them to meet at places (such as ration shop, employment office) where they can see the real cruel world. She makes them see what others suffer. The foursome try to meet the Devi (alias Kushboo) but end up seeing Roshini (another Devi). So convenient that she is mentally handicapped, she makes them believe she was the one who they are all looking for. When Kushboo realizes the plan is not working and the four are actually scavenging with Roshini, she explodes (kind of) with her flashback. Her younger brother (Karan) was like these four with no definite plans for the future. His father(nowadays who else but Raguvaran) advises a lot. Even the girlfriend, who takes Raguvaran's advice, ditches Karan because he has no job to look after the family. The only solution he can think of is suicide. Having listened to the story - Kusboo's past life - the foursome change their habit and demolish the wall. (Perhaps they will have to find somewhere else until they get a job!).
This is one of the best performances of
Kushboo. She looks pretty too. When she can speak fluent Tamil, why can't she dub for
herself (remember the days of Vigneshwar??). At least she may get a national award (not
for this movie, for god sake). It is interesting to see her in a mature character rather
than running around the trees with a hero. Arunkumar tries to be a smart hero. He seems to
have realized that being an action hero won't be good enough. Maybe he needs a 'Poove
Unakkaaga' to join the top league of actors. It seems the director wanted to make justice
to all his four main characters. He seems to have divided scenes for all the four. When he
finished with one round, the interval comes and with the second round the climax comes. No
one stays in mind for long. Thamu is the best of the other three. Ramji uses his Rajini
dialogue delivery but fails miserably as it doesn't suit the character. Lets talk about
Roshini's acting after 10 movies. She has just started picking one or two. Balasekaran
fails in his screenplay but comes out top with dialogues. At one point the characters
seems to have realized their mistakes when they see their parents suffer for money. Soon
after that they start singing duet with Roshini. Maybe it was a blessing in disguise.
Otherwise those nice songs would not have been heard. A good start for Jeyanth. The scene
when Arunkumar goes with a suitcase to buy vegetables (image!!) and when Nayar (Hanifa)
advises the four when they wreck his little shop are particularly impressive. Totally, an
enjoyable movie.
